A MiM Story About Learning, Remembering, and Hope

At MiM (Memory in Motion), we believe memory isn’t something you lose — it’s something you use.
And sometimes, the simplest activities — the ones that make us laugh, think, and count together — are the ones that bring it back to life.

There’s something magical about watching a child discover patterns — the same magic you see when a Traveler remembers one.

Our grandsons, Brenin and Colwyn, are at that perfect age where math feels like an adventure. They’ll count seashells, golf balls, the number of times Steely chases the ball before giving up entirely. They’re learning that numbers tell stories — about time, fairness, rhythm, and joy.

And then there’s Grandpa Tim ( affetionaly known as Grumpah)— who, in his own way, is learning too.

When the boys visit, they sit around the kitchen table and start what we now call “Grandpa’s Math Game.”
One boy adds, one counts, and Grandpa checks. There’s laughter, a bit of chaos, and that quiet joy of connection that makes time irrelevant.

They’re not just doing math — they’re practicing the same mental pathways MiM is built to protect: pattern recognition, rhythm, reasoning, and memory.

The beautiful part? Everyone wins.

“They’re not just doing math — they’re remembering how to connect.”

The Deeper Lesson:
For children, math builds confidence and curiosity.
For Travelers, it rebuilds trust in their own mind.

It’s the same skill, played at different speeds.
A child’s “2 + 2” becomes an adult’s “Where did I put the mug?”
Both require logic, sequencing, and the quiet belief that the answer is still in there somewhere.

That’s why MiM matters — because cognition isn’t a one-way street.
It’s a bridge we can cross from both sides, together.

When Grandpa Tim and the boys count, laugh, and make mistakes, what they’re really doing is exercising the most important part of the human brain — hope.

Hope that learning never ends.
Hope that memory isn’t a finish line.
Hope that connection itself can be the cure.

Closing Thought:
Maybe we’ve been teaching math all wrong.
It’s not about getting the answer right — it’s about keeping the conversation going.

So whether you’re counting clouds, golf swings, or teaspoons of sugar, do it together.

Because the real equation is simple:

Curiosity + Connection = Memory in Motion.

MiM Moment — Try This:
Count something together — raindrops, steps, songs, or smiles.
The number doesn’t matter.
The remembering does.

Grandpa’s Math Game: The Joy of Counting What Matters

We trusted the first diagnosis. We didn’t have time not to.
When a doctor tells you something life-changing, you nod, you believe, you act.

But what if it’s wrong?

“Technology is moving faster than most doctors’ education right now.”
That’s not blame. It’s fact. Medical schools can’t rewrite every syllabus each time science evolves, but families live in real time.

So instead of whispering about it, let’s talk to each other.
Let’s compare notes, share questions, swap resources, and challenge what no longer fits.
Because misplaced trust isn’t just risky — it can waste precious time that could have been living.

Testing matters. Talking matters more.

“Forget stigma. Start conversation.”
At MiM Spark, that’s the goal: to make curiosity louder than fear.

If this hit home, share it with someone who’s still afraid to ask.
The only wrong question is the one that stays silent.

Let’s Talk About It

When the App Glitches, but the Mission Doesn’t
(A MiM Spark reflection on building technology that remembers what it’s for)

I haven’t written in a few weeks. Not because MiM stalled — but because I did.

I was wrestling with a “no-code” platform that promised to make building easy.
Spoiler: it didn’t.

After days of error messages that read like breakup texts from my laptop, I realized something that stopped me cold — I was living the very thing MiM was built to fix: frustration, confusion, and that creeping sense that maybe I was the problem.

Meanwhile, the internet handed me perspective in the form of a post by Mary Bruce.
She shared how a doctor dismissed her relative’s pain with the words,

“He has dementia. He won’t know pain.”
He did.
He just couldn’t say it.

Hundreds of caregivers and clinicians replied — all telling the same story: pain mistaken for “behavior,” distress written off as decline.

And it hit me.
This is why we built MiM (Memory in Motion).

Because agitation, sleeplessness, or withdrawal aren’t just symptoms.
They’re signals.

MiM teaches what we call translation work — the subtle art of listening when words no longer do the job.
It’s a skill caregivers, clinicians, and even founders need to practice every single day.

When the code glitches, when something breaks, when I start doubting whether this thing will ever launch exactly as I imagined — that’s just another kind of signal. A reminder that technology is scaffolding. The mission is the muscle.

And no algorithm or platform meltdown can replace what MiM is really building:
human understanding.

Tim is still writing.
He’s still golfing.
He’s still in motion.

And so is MiM.

Because we can’t stop dementia from changing the conversation —
but we can make sure the conversation doesn’t stop.

One More Thing…
We’re looking for a few willing humans to help us test MiM — real people who understand that this isn’t just another app. It’s a lifeline for those trying to navigate the small chaos of daily life with memory loss.

Give it a whirl. What have you got to lose?
After all, it could help not only you and your loved ones,
but countless others still searching for a way to stay connected, structured, and seen.

👉 livewithmim.org

Author’s Note:
This one is proudly Zombie-Glaze–free. It’s imperfect, honest, and human — the way memory, and meaning, are meant to be.

When the App Glitches, but the Mission Doesn't

Six months. That’s how long my husband Tim and I have lived under the crushing weight of a diagnosis that may not even be true.

Back then, a doctor told us flatly that Tim had Alzheimer’s. No nuance, no options, no testing beyond the basic office assessments. The verdict was final, delivered like a gavel strike: I’m sorry, but you have AD.

We were handed a prescription for Aricept, told to take his car keys away, and even warned to alert the police in case of a Silver Alert. Our lives changed in an instant. We cancelled vacations. We shifted routines. We lived with a label that dictated fear.

And yet, yesterday, under questioning, a nurse finally admitted the truth: “We don’t actually diagnose. He just had all the indicators.”
All the indicators. But no proof.
No PET scan. No neurologist referral. Just pills and insurance payments, month after month.

Tim has kept golfing, walking our dogs, cooking, and—most importantly—writing. He is more engaged than he has been in years. Not because of Aricept, but because we refused to let that rushed diagnosis define him.

Why This Matters
How many families have had their hope stolen by words delivered too soon, too carelessly? How many lives are being rewritten under a diagnosis with no proof?

Alzheimer’s is devastating. But so is being told you have it when the evidence isn’t there. This isn’t just about my husband—it’s about the countless others who are being funneled into the same path without the right testing, without dignity, without a chance to fight.

What Needs to Change
No one should be labeled with Alzheimer’s without a PET scan or neurologist confirmation.
Psychiatrists are not the final word on diagnosis. Families deserve a real pathway to clarity, not a prescription pad.
Insurance incentives must not replace medical diligence. Lives are too precious for shortcuts.
Our Call to Action
If you or someone you love is handed an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, demand proof. Ask for the PET scan. Insist on a neurologist. Don’t let a rushed verdict dictate your future.

For us, we’ve turned our pain into purpose. With the help of AI, we’ve built MiM (Memory in Motion)—an app designed to preserve dignity, routine, and identity for those facing early memory challenges. Because life doesn’t end with memory loss—and it certainly shouldn’t end with an assumption.

This is a rallying cry: Don’t let anyone steal your hope, your time, or your life without proof.

And let’s see if the press pick up on this—or bury it.

Alzheimer’s: A Diagnosis with No Proof

This morning my husband Tim, who lives with Alzheimer’s, came running into my homeoffice excited:
“Look! Dr. Sanjay Gupta has found a cure!”

Except… he hasn’t.
And Sanjay himself has said so:

“No, I have not discovered a cure. No, I am not selling supplements. Those ads are fake.”

What’s Really Going On
Scammers are using deepfake ads with Gupta’s face, CNN’s logo, and the word cure to push miracle pills.
It’s not medicine — it’s weaponized hope.

The Truth
✅ Lifestyle changes can help.
✅ Drugs like Donanemab show promise in slowing progression.
❌ A Facebook pop-up “cure”? FRAUD.
If there were a cure, you’d hear it from the FDA, the New England Journal of Medicine, and every neurologist in the world — not a sidebar ad.

Why I’m Shouting
Because families like ours deserve better.
Because hope isn’t for sale.
And because scammers shouldn’t be allowed to profit off grief.

👉 Real updates, real tools, no snake oil: livewithmim.org

Jensen Huang, the CEO of Nvidia, famously said: “You won’t lose your job to AI, but you will lose it to someone who uses AI.”

That’s a hopeful line if you’re in corporate America. A rallying cry for the inbox-weary. But when you’re staring down an Alzheimer’s diagnosis, the calculus shifts. The hard truth is this: once Alzheimer’s is in the picture, you will lose your memory. No pep talk changes that.

And yet — the second tragedy isn’t memory loss. It’s what happens when fear of technology convinces families to slam the doors shut. Travelers are told they can’t cook, can’t drive, can’t walk alone. Supporters are told the only safe option is to lock, restrict, and monitor. That’s not living. That’s waiting.

The irony? The very tools people fear — the “AI” everyone thinks is too complicated or too cold — can be the difference between a life locked down and a life still lived.

At MiM, we don’t ask Travelers to master technology. We design it so they don’t even feel the gears turning. Structure is invisible. Dignity is visible. Routines show up like a familiar friend, not another app to learn. Supporters stop feeling like jailers and start feeling like guides.

AI in an app isn’t about replacing humanity. It’s about giving Travelers and those surrounding them the chance to live and breathe easier.

Fear of tech is the same story whether you’re closing a deal or caring for a loved one. In real estate, clients don’t need to know how the algorithms work — they just need to trust their broker is using them in their favor. In Alzheimer’s, Travelers don’t need to “embrace AI” — they just need to know their mornings, their memories, and their agency aren’t lost before the disease takes them.

AI won’t take your memory. Alzheimer’s will. But if we do this right, AI can give you back the one thing Alzheimer’s steals fastest: the confidence to live today.

AI Won’t Take Your Job, But Alzheimer’s Will Take Your Memory
